Bulk Publish to Amazon Kindle Marketplace

How are some people able to publish so many ebooks so fast? I think the person who asked this question was actually referring to the phenomenon we see of people publishing hundreds, if not thousands, of ebooks on Amazon Kindle and playing the “numbers” game. The fact is, the people publishing hundreds of ebooks to Amazon Kindle Marketplace that way are NOT writing the ebooks themselves. They are getting that content from one of several sources.

Private Label Rights Content

This is the perennial favorite of the bulk publishers on Amazon right now. The problem is, even with only a few people using the same ebook content, consumers are starting to complain. When consumers start to complain, big companies get angry. When big companies get angry, they start kicking authors off Kindle.

Don’t forget, Amazon is the same company that fired tens-of-thousands of affiliates with the click of a mouse in any state where they didn’t like the sales tax laws. This is the same company that has sophisticated software that merchandises products like no other company in history. Don’t you think they can sniff out duplicate content in about one nanosecond? Don’t you think they have the cajones to kick anyone they want off their platform without a second look (and do it automatically)? Of course they can and they will – just wait and see!

Public Domain Content

The other major way people are publishing bulk content on Amazon is with public domain content. Public domain content is content that the copyright has either expired or was never in place (as is the case with U.S. Federal Government content). Amazon pays only a 30% royalty on this content to help discourage its distribution, but even that doesn’t completely cut down on the amount of duplicate submissions.

The Amazon Slap

Don’t you think they can sniff out duplicate content in about one nanosecond? Don’t you think they have the cajones to kick anyone they want off their platform without a second look (and do it automatically)? Of course they can and they will!
Don’t you think they can sniff out duplicate content in about one nanosecond? Don’t you think they have the cajones to kick anyone they want off their platform without a second look (and do it automatically)? Of course they can and they will!

The Coming "Amazon Slap" For Low-Quality, Bulk Amazon Publishers

Now, the reality is, Amazon will only let this go on for so long. Just like Google allowed less-than-perfect advertisers on their AdWords system to build momentum in the beginning, only to later “slap” and ban those same advertisers, Amazon will do the same. By selling tens-of-millions of Kindles, Amazon needed millions of CHEAP ebooks to satisfy the consumption demands of those new Kindle owners. But, over time and like any good publisher, Amazon will cull out and get rid of the crappy ebooks. Maybe they won’t ban the authors like Google did advertisers, but they’ll just restrict how those duplicate ebooks show up in the search results (which accomplishes the exact same thing).

So, bottom line: if you want to make it in the Amazon ebook world and you want to have a lot of titles up for sale, you need to do one or two things. First, become a prolific ebook author in your own right. Turn out a 40-50 page ebook every other week for the next year and do some basic but solid marketing of your titles. At the end of the year you’ll have 25 ebooks for sale. If you can sell 5 per day of each title (that’s a measly 150 copies per month per ebook) and average $2.80 profit per ebook (that’s a cover price of $3.99), that comes out to $350 per day, or $127,750.00 per year. In the popular vernacular, “That don’t suck!”

Your second option is to find writers willing to pump out new, original titles for you at slave-wage prices. This method is used by a much smaller number of bulk publishers who hire cheap ghost writers off Fiverr.com and similar sites springing up all over the web. For around $15-100 you can hire someone to write a 20-50 page ebook. These writers typically either re-write existing content or come up with something from scratch. To make this model work, bulk publishers need to invest reasonably heavily (compared to other methods) on the front end, and then hope to recoup their expenses over the long haul. It’s doable, but the quality of the writing, turnover of the writers, and headaches for managing the process might not make this an option for everyone.

So, the choice is yours. With Amazon (and Barnes & Noble and the iBook Store), the opportunities to build a solid ebook business have never been better. But, despite what the get-rich-quick idiots would have you believe, there is a real price to be paid one way or the other. If you build your business on quality content, I believe you can stick around for the long haul. If you build on gimmicks and “holes in the system” then you’ll just be another flash-in-the-pan ebook author. Which do you want to be?

If you liked this article then you'll LOVE this! Why? Because if you really want to sell ebooks for HUGE profit margins, this is what the top ebook authors do http://www.igottatellyou.com/the-truth-about-ebooks.html

Jim,

I think you're spot on. This has to happen at some point. I always think it's better to make a smaller fraction of what you could by 'gaming' the system so you don't have to keep looking over your shoulder.

This is just what the doctor ordered. I honestly wasn't aware that there was money to be made on Kindle and glad you've shared and shown the right way to do this.

Looking forward to reading more indepth stuff from you on this topic.

Jim you have done it again. My membership in your Net Reporter Program has been re paid many times over and I want to thank you for your clear and concise "How To" step by step instructions.

I have followed your publishing system to write a niche market book for Australia and soon to be re written and launched in America. Thanks to you I am well on the way to my Internet marketing dreams and getting cash in my account every day now. Not much and not enough and it is growing. Thank you. Jeff Muir.

Great information the way forward.

Only last year I decided to spend any free time signing up & creating articles for hubpages, 2 reasons, the first I really love writing, & to allow my writing more practice whilst share my personal knowledge & experiences also creating the opportunity for pointing more information towards some of my own products on offer I have created, & the second is, to begin building up an on-line residual income for the rest of my life.

I like your philosophy, create e-books by the plenty throughout the year & publish them on Amazon Kindle, for another on-line residual income for years to come. I have already began this very venture, but you have now reminded me about the importance of carrying on with this task, which will be my new venture for this year.

Great article by the way, voted right up, thank you for sharing.

Hi Jim

PLR can be a nightmare if used incorrectly. You need to find good quality PLR, so much of it is rubbish, and rewrite it to make it original.

Better still write your own. Not sure I could write 25, but then the one I am working on is up to 72 pages and isn't finished yet. I will have 2 more like that, but will have some 20-30 pages.

This info is right on the mark! Building a real business with real, original information, instead of just running from "opportunity" to "opportunity" is what will build true prosperity - for everyone involved. Ultimately, we get out what we put in. And quality (IMHO) matters much more than quantity in the long run.

Thanks for this excellent information!

Jim,

An enlightening article. I recently paid $497 for a course that purports to instruct a wannabe writer on churning out many, many ebooks in a short period of time. Needless to say, I'm delighted that this course came with a 30-day money back guarantee. I'm in the process of reading your 2007 book about electronic publishing. I'm looking forward to your new edition :-)

Thank you Jim, this is great info. to know. I thought about publishing an ebook through kindle but just have to start and stop putting it off.

Jim-

As ever, you keep beating the drum for high quality, high value contributions to the marketplace. I'm with you here, and particularly mindful of this as I am literally in the process of uploading a few new books on Amazon.

I'm grateful for all I've learned from you over the years, and recognize there's 'much, much more' to put into action for business building success.

Helen Wilkie 4 months ago

I totally agree, Jim. I've been watching as Amazon made it so easy to publish on Kindle and I could see that it would result in a lot of garbage books and articles. As you say, Amazon is a sophisticated operation and it's only a matter of time before they have to do something about it.

creativlady profile image

creativlady 4 months ago

Jim, I hope Amazon wakes up really soon. I am seek and tired seeing garbage on Amazon.

When I see all these 'e-books' I feel very sad.

I read your book, I own it and fully support. Your ebook and several other books I read encouraged me to publish.

I have 1 title '7 Deadly Search Engine Optimization Mistakes To Avoid'. I don't see it as anything major, but it's a start. People read it, they support it, they recognize me and contact me. My website http://SmallBusinessClicks.biz gained popularity.

Since I published the e-book, I gained about 70 LinkedIn contacts, high quality contacts I must say.

I don't know what people that promote plr publishing think. Actually, it looks like they don't think at all.

I support your opinion and highly recommend your book.

Actually, can't wait for the Amazon Punch - which is more what your graphic represents than the slap - because that will just make it easier and better for those of us who are writing quality e-books for Amazon. Can't wait to hear more from your e-book writing program!

Jayne Kopp 4 months ago

Hi Jim, very sensible article. It's a shame how some just feel they can take advantage of the public and insult their intelligence by flogging low quality products. It really spoils it for the rest of us.

I believe anyone can really make a go of e-book writing if they put in the honest effort and refrain from taking the easy way out by trying to flog spun-crap to make a buck the easy way. It's a shame isn't it that there are ding bats to look out for in every crowd.

It just creates the need for Amazon and similar companies to tighten up their guidelines at the expense of everyone else when really, they have provided genuine quality writers with a terrific business opportunity that should not be abused.

Hi Jim!

Great article! Full of good solid common sense, which is often lacking these days in the world of online biz. Quality will always have staying power. Get rich tomorrow means get poor next week. If you as an author don't care about the quality of the product you produce for your readers, then you cannot create anything sustainable.

The webinar trainings I've taken with you have ALWAYS been quality, and full of much common sense and good solid practical and useful information.

I'm completing my third ebook after your wonderful webinars this past fall, and although I'm not up to your prolific writing speed, I'm starting to see wonderful things happening. You know your stuff, and listening to you has been very good for me! Thank you so very much.

J Bold 4 months ago

Wait and see about PLR?

They have been kicking out PLR for quite some time now, though I'm not sure if they've banned accounts because of it. Wouldn't be surprised if it's already happened though, if they found an account that was purely PLR.

friarjames 4 months ago

Jim

I have thought for quite some time that all the duplicate PLR crap was going to pollute Amazon's library. Some of the "books" are little more than template-built pamphlets consisting of only a few pages. If Amazon, and others, are going to maintain their reputation they are going to have to come up with quality reading materials...not just weakly written junk hung on a provocative title w/ appealing cover art.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Joe Mama 4 months ago

Jim,

The very worst plr is better than your ambigous, redundant, fearmongering. Your courses are complete crap. But I am sure at one time this was good enough, like living in caves. You have no idea about content copywrite rule or laws. Or you are hiding the truth.

Let me ask you all a question, if you buy concepts and ideas in the form of an info product of any kind, when you use that idea in your own work, how in the hell is it stolen if you paid for it? Now everyone knows you can NOT copywrite an idea. Jim knows this, or he is a moron, that is reflected in his works.

The problem with kindle is that they give it away for free. This is where the value of kindle is racing to, Worthless.

Drill down and the kindle is like a Jim Edwards product, IT IS OBSOLETE FROM THE OUTSET. Yet there are millions of uneducated morons willing to pay for the jibberish that made up kindle from the very beginning. It has always been plr jibberish and always will be.

Why in the hell would anyone want a device that chooses to decide everything for you. Like Google, do they know more about what you are searching for than you do?

One more thing, I know without asking that if Angeli has published 3 books, using Jims training he is probably making far less off of those books than Jim made off of selling him the useless courses!

I welcome any questions, if anyone is interested in the truth?

Interesting comments... also interesting that people like you normally use the Internet's anonymity to hide deeper issues. If you ever bought something from us and were not satisfied, we issue refunds without hesitation.

We sell the truth... we teach what works... I teach based on actual experience... and I call it like I see it. If you don't like that, there are plenty of other people you can follow and I think that's a great idea.

It sounds like you're disappointed in a lot more than any product you may or may not have bought from me.

Hi Jim,

I totally agree. I love my Kindle. Particularly because i am in New Zealand and the cost of posting books from Amazon in the USA to me is often more than the price of the book in the first place!

However I have bought some cheap kindle books on topics that have been of interest to me. What really annoyed me was that I found instances where the 'author' hadn't taken the time to completely update the PLR text they used. i.e. It had things like "[insert name]" in the tsxt.

I did publish one Kindle book: "The Web 3.0 opportunity" which took only a week to write (although I had been collecting the research for almost a year).

The point is that I fully endorse the 'Amazon Slap'. There is definitely room to make a decent income from Kindle without resorting to the lowest common denominator and trying to 'beat' the system.

Hey Jim!

This is a very informative post, regarding publishing lots of quality eBooks and Amazon's Future Slapfest.

I'm involved in 3 different niches that I have GREAT ORIGINAL content for, and that I'm preparing to upload to Kindle.

Your post pretty much confirms what I already know; QUALITY is KING!

***********************************

Why CREATE Original, QUALITY eBooks?

***********************************

I have to take this approach because that's just who I am, and what I'm about... Although, I'll publish a great deal of my work with a "Pen Name" I still believe in giving my "Pen Name" a reputation for delivering QUALITY...

By taking the high road to producing QUALITY, ORIGINAL "Content," I am assured that there won't be any "duplicate content" issues that Amazon can spank me for, later, as I forge ahead with my Publishing Empire...

There are some of your Readers who will pay for quality content to be created, and that's fine, as long as they 1) take an "ACTIVE ROLE" in what's being produced and 2) if they put themselves in the place of the customers who are going to buy the books...

They should make sure that the books that they have someone else create would cause a YES answer, when asked the following questions:

1. Would they want to read the content in the book for

if it were FREE?

2. Would they PAY to read the content in the book?

3. Would they be willing to buy additional books created

by the Author and possibly recommend that others do

the same?

If you can't honestly get a YES answer to each of the above questions, it's NOT Quality Content...

***********************

Traditional Publishing:

***********************

Over the years, I've been paid to write 7 different books & stories, by 3 different traditional Publishing Houses, but I've found that the traditional way of getting my books to the masses is time consuming and offers me NO CONTROL over the process...

And getting peanuts from the publishers for all of my blood, sweat, and tears has left a bad taste in my mouth...

*********************

The Kindle Bandwagon?

*********************

As a result of my frustration with Traditional Publishing Houses, I've decided to take my Quality, Original Content and use Kindle and other ePublishing outlets to really kick some butt, by using some of the tips and advice that you've explained to us, in this post.

*****************************

Figuring Out WHAT to Publish:

*****************************

1. Using Amazon's own "Best Sellers" is so obvious that lots of us probably haven't even thought about it!

If Amazon is already selling something with a title that you're interested in, it's worth it to explore and determine if YOU can also make money with a similar title!

2. Check the "Dummies Books" for ideas, just as you would check Amazon. The folks at Dummies have been around for more than 20 years...

They put tons of research and money into having books written by other people to sell to the masses:-)

They're NO DUMMIES:-)

3. Check Amazon for "Best Selling Physical Products and write a companion "How To" book that makes using the product even easier...

*** Heck if you really feel sexy, make a short "How To" Audio or Video (or both)that can compliment the hot selling Product that you can sell!

Finding interesting, viable things to write about has ENDLESS possibilities! And just as Jim said, preparing a 40-50 page QUALITY book, every 2 weeks won't KILL you.

***If you got really smart, you would take some new Quality, Original content (or some that you already have) and break it up into a "Series" of Books!

I'm really looking forward to learning the methods and strategies that have made you successful,in your marketing and publishing efforts.

Thanks again, Jim for opening our eyeballs to some important publishing information regarding Amazon.

I Love this Stuff:-)

Very interesting and informative article about e book publishing on Amazon. Yes writing online is a business and like any other business it is better to do the job right! We can earn money honestly by producing good quality original writing!

Mike 3 months ago

Unfortunately I came from the MMO and IM universe. In that world everything is a little white hat, gray hat,and Black hat.

I needed to really relearn everything When it came to Amazon's new Kindle e-books. When I first looked at it, and the easy concept behind it-all I could think of was the good old days of Google cash.

I think everybody else did too that came from my neck of the Internet woods. I have purchased WSO's and other so-called guru kindle makers. And it was all churn burn baby!

PLR and private domain were served as the new cash register. And halfway through this junk I really started thinking about the end-user.Kindle buyers are not like the individuals who frequent the MMO niche. For the most part they're readers, and it occurred to me that I had written a lot of articles, a lot of blog posts, therefore I knew I could write. But I didn't know the right way to write.

This does sound like a plug for Jim, but I got his e-book writing course and it works.

I now realize if you focus on quality versus quantity the rewards are immense.

Now I would rather put out 2 to 3 e-books a month, and end up with 30 or more e-books at the end of the year that can remain evergreen with minor changes in a timely manner. (Some of you know what I mean)

I guess it all boils down to which side of the fence you want to stand on.
