How to write a How To eBook... here's the answer!

How do you write a "how to" ebook?

Writing a “how to” ebook is actually really simple and it’s one of the best ways anyone can get started writing an ebook. If you’re curious about getting started writing ebooks, or you’ve already self-published an ebook or two, this article will lay it all out for you here in a few simple steps.

Step 1 – Decide what type of “how to” ebook you’ll write and how long it will be. You also need to write out a focusing statement that defines what the main focus of your ebook is and what the reader should expect to get out of it. This part of the ebook writing process should take about 30 minutes.

Step 2 – Create a detailed outline of the steps you’ll teach in your how to ebook. Don’t worry about getting them in the proper order at this point. The important thing is to get all the steps down on paper or into your computer in a giant brainstorming session. This step helps cut down on stress later in the ebook writing process where you can often get a nagging sensation that you “forgot” something. Spend some significant time on this part of creating your how to ebook because it will make the writing phase MUCH easier.

Step 3 – Now that you brainstormed all the steps in your how to ebook, it’s time to make a decision. Do these steps need to be in a specific order, or does the actual order of the steps not matter? If order is important, take the time now to put the steps into a logical order and make sure you haven’t left anything out. You can do this with a basic word processor or a Mindmap program like Mindjet or Freemind.

Step 4 – Now that you have the steps in order (and have filled in any missing steps), take the major steps in the “how to” process and make those your ebook “chapters.” Now, grab your calendar and put in the times and dates you will write each chapter in your new how to ebook. The only way your ebook will get written is if you divide the project up into chunks and then put a deadline on writing each chunk.

How to Write and Publish Your Ebook

Step 5 – Do it! Write out each chunk in your ebook and get it done. Once you finish writing that, then write the introduction (yes, write the introduction AFTER you create the ebook, it’s easier), write the conclusion, and include an author bio. Also, make sure to include information at the beginning of your ebook about any additional products, how to ebooks or services that will help the reader get more of what they are looking for out of your ebook. Plus, if you include links to your own products or to affiliate products that pay a commission, you create additional revenue streams from your how to ebooks.

Step 6 – Proofread and get at least 2 other sets of eyes to look over your ebook. Enlist a friend or two to find the obvious spelling mistakes, formatting errors and more. Basic formatting is fine with your ebook. The most important thing is a clean look and consistent formatting, NOT fancy fonts or graphics. Make sure the formatting is consistent throughout so people instantly know the difference between body text, chapter headings, and sub-chapter headings.

Step 7 – Publish your new how to ebook on Amazon Kindle and you own website. Amazon gives you the biggest bang for your buck of all the mobile ebook readers, so make sure to do that one first. After Amazon, you can publish on multiple mobile marketplaces like Barnes & Noble, iBook Store and more using SmashWords.com. They handle all the nitty-gritty for those other sites, but you should submit to Amazon Kindle yourself to get the ball rolling quickly. You should also publish your ebook for sale on your own website so you can build up a list of customers you can announce future book releases directly to them. This will make each subsequent how to ebook you release increasingly successful because you can get an initial bump in sales by contacting existing customers.

Step 8 – Do it again! The real money in writing how-to ebooks comes from publishing multiple ebooks and then using each one to expose new customers to all the other ebooks you’ve written. Just like you find a favorite author and want to buy everything they have, you should set your how to ebook customers up with the same chance to buy every ebook you self-publish now, in the future, or any ebooks you’ve published in the past! The key to remember is that as you gain in skill and knowledge, you can always release a new, updated version of your ebook in the future.

Hi Ebookcoach

After reading one of your posts on igottatellyou.com, I went back to a nearly finished ebook that I almost deleted due to adverse comments from one person. (3 other people liked it) I have added a lot more content anf hope to finish it soon.

Sounds like Amazon is going to take a page out of Ezinearticles and take it a step or two farther. Interesting. I won't enjoy paying for something and then finding that it was copied from another persons work or that it was available free. Thanks for sharing the information

William,

And therein lies the core of the problem... nobody would feel good about that and it can seriously damage Amazon's business - something they won't allow!
